FAQ:

What is Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA)?

Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) is a service that helps businesses grow by providing access to Amazon's logistics network. Businesses send products to Amazon fulfillment centers and when a customer makes a purchase, we handle receiving, packing, shipping, customer service, and returns for those orders. Effective, reliable fulfillment delights customers. If you use multi-channel fulfillment (MCF), where Amazon handles the packing and shipping of products sold through channels other than Amazon for you, inventory management can be consolidated, which makes it more possible to run a smooth business.

FBA Pricing Overview

FBA fees mainly consist of “inventory storage fees” for storing products in warehouses and “shipping charges” related to shipping the products. In addition to that, other fees may apply, such as “long-term storage fees” and “unplanned service fees.”

Amazon jargon:

Inventory Storage fee

Storage fees are based on the daily average volume (measured in cubic meters) for the space your inventory occupies in Amazon fulfillment centers. For inventory that exceeds 365 days in fulfillment centers, additional long-term storage fees will be charged.

Amazon jargon:

Shipping charges

Shipping charges include the cost per item for picking and packing the ordered product, shipping, customer service, and returns, and the amount varies depending on the product’s size and weight.

The FBA Revenue Calculator, broken down into three steps

Here are three steps to using the FBA Revenue Calculator.

1. How to access

You can access the FBA Revenue Calculator below. You can use it as a guest, even if you haven’t started selling yet. Alternatively, you can log in to Seller Central to use it.
Alternatively, you can access it by logging in to Seller Central and searching for “Revenue Calculator” etc. in the search box, outlined in red.

2. Fill in product information

If the product has been registered on Amazon

If the product you want to sell is already registered on Amazon, you can search for it by following the steps below.

1. Select “Search Amazon Catalog” located at the top left of the page
2. Search by either “SKU, product name, ISBN, EAN, or ASIN” in “Search for Amazon Products”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ASIN?
Every product offered for sale on Amazon gets an automatically generated ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number). However, GTIN and SKUs are not automatically generated. Multiple sellers may offer the same ASIN when listing the same product. ASINs can be found on Amazon’s product page under "Product Information," or through Seller Central.
What is a SKU?
SKU is an English abbreviation for "Stock Keeping Unit", which is a term that indicates the smallest unit when managing inventory.
In Japanese, it is sometimes called an "inventory control number" or "product control number". Even if the same product comes in a different size or color, you can find out what it is with the SKU. You can check SKUs from Seller Central.

If the product is not registered on Amazon

If the product you want to sell hasn’t been registered on Amazon yet, you can search for it by following the steps below.

1. Select the “Product Definition” tab
2. Search by manually entering product dimensions, weight, category, price, and shipping rates

3. Confirm the estimate

When you fill in the product information and search, the estimate will be displayed. On the left, "Fulfilled by Amazon" is displayed, and in the center, "Seller-Fulfilled" is displayed, allowing you to check Amazon fees, fulfillment costs, inventory storage fees, and other expenses for each.
The items in the red frame in the image below are automatically filled in based on the product information, but you can create a more accurate simulation by filling in the actual costs in the other blank fields.

Additionally, by selecting "Choose Options" on the right, you can compare the costs of the fulfilled by Amazon option versus the seller-fulfilled option in a graph.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the FBA Revenue Calculator on my smartphone?
The FBA Revenue Calculator can also be used on a smartphone. The access method is the same as on a computer. However, the FBA Revenue Calculator is designed as a tool to be used on a computer, so when used on a smartphone, it may be harder to view and navigate, so we recommend using it on a computer.

FBA Revenue Calculator usage examples

For example, let’s try estimating the costs for a box of masks that are not yet registered on Amazon. The details for the box of masks are assumed to be as follows.
*This is a product that does not exist.
Example: Box of masks

/Dimensions: 20 x 10 x 10 cm
/Weight: 200 g
/Product price: ¥2,000
1) Enter product information:
Enter the required information as shown in the image below. After making the estimate, you can review the results.
2) Enter other costs:
You can generate a more accurate estimate by including other costs, such as the cost of the product. Here, we assume that the product cost is ¥500.

3) Confirm profit margin when using FBA:
In this case, if you use FBA to fulfill from Amazon, the net profit per item will be ¥635, and the net profit margin will be 31.73%.

4) If comparing with seller fulfilled, enter the shipping cost and inventory storage fee:
Here, if the shipping cost is ¥800 and the inventory storage fee is ¥10, the net profit is ¥290 and the net profit margin is 14.50%, showing that FBA can help optimize costs. You can also compare visually by using the comparison graph on the right side.
*Shipping costs have been tentatively set based on the shipping fee for a 40-size parcel from a major courier company. Please note that this is for reference and may differ from actual costs. *The "fixed closing fee" included in Amazon fees applies only to Individual sellers.

Three things to keep in mind about the FBA Revenue Calculator

The FBA Revenue Calculator is a convenient tool for sellers to plan their sales on Amazon, but note that the calculation results only serve as a benchmark. Here are three things to keep in mind when using the FBA Revenue Calculator.

1. Excise tax calculation

The FBA Revenue Calculator does not have a column for entering excise tax, so you will need to calculate excise tax separately.
Selling fees are subject to excise tax. For example, if the FBA Revenue Calculator shows a selling fee of ¥100, the actual amount including excise tax will be ¥110.
*Calculation based on a 10% excise tax as of August 2025.

If you need a more precise calculation, please note that the consumption tax must be calculated separately.

Amazon jargon:

Referral fees

For every item sold, sellers pay Amazon a percentage of the total price, or a minimum amount, whichever is greater. This includes item price, shipping cost, and any gift-wrapping charges. Referral fees are in addition to selling plan fees.

2. Fees included in the FBA revenue calculator

Some fees are not included in the simulation provided by the FBA Revenue Calculator. You can find details about which fees are included and which aren’t included below.

Start by getting a rough estimate with the FBA Revenue Calculator, and if you want a more detailed calculation, check the fees that aren’t included. You can manually add fees that aren’t included to the “Other Costs” column.

Fees that are included

• Selling fees
• Fulfillment fees (if applicable) for products sold in the Amazon store (including lithium batteries and oversized products that require special handling)
• Inventory storage fees (the simulator assumes inventory is stored in the selected country)
• Long-term storage fees
• Variable closing fees

Frequently Asked Questions

What specific fees are not included in the FBA Revenue Calculator?
The following may apply. Not all of these will necessarily be charged, as some fees are only applied in certain situations.

• Monthly subscription fee
• Per-item fee
• Removal order fee
• Restocking fee
• Unplanned service fee
• Refund administration fee
• Rental book service fee
• High-volume listing fee
• Other less common fees that aren’t listed under the fees that are included
